The poodle is one of the oldest dog breeds.  Most historians are of the opinion that it is a breed that originated in Germany and that later, in France, it became a distinct breed. The breed is said to be the result of crosses between various European water dogs. However, other historians believe that one of the poodle’s ancestors may be the African berbet dog, imported to Spain. From here, the dogs arrived in Gaul where they were  used for their skills as skilled hunters. It is also believed that the poodle dog breed may have descended from the shepherd dogs of Asia,  and that they later traveled with Germanic tribes, such as the Goths and Ostrogoths, and became water dogs.

Whatever the ancestry, it is certainly a very old breed. In fact, these dogs appear  in the ornaments of Egyptian or Romanesque tools and tombs dating back to the first centuries BC.

Smaller sizes of the poodle dog, such as the toy poodle, were created to please the Parisian bourgeoisie.  They served as complements of the nobility and the merchants of the time showed off them. During the Renaissance, some owners used to put small poodles in large shirt sleeves.

On the other hand, the  standard poodle dog  was used for duck hunting. The miniature was used as a truffle dog, due to its very fine sense of smell.

The  homeless dogs were also used in the art circus. They were dressed in gaudy clothes to stage funny shows and obedience tests.

There are three poodle sizes: toy, dwarf, standard.  Of the three, the last is the oldest. Even today, dogs of this size are used as retrievers and water dogs.

Toy Poodles measure about 10 inches at the withers, Miniature Poodles between 4 and 6 inches at the withers, and the Standard Poodle is  over 10 inches. Regardless of their size, they are famous for being playful, highly intelligent and agile dogs. Their sporting performances and hunting tests are excellent.

Obedience training is key to keeping the poodle’s mind active. Regular walks and family games are two of the needs of these fine little dogs.

This breed type has various colors: white, gray, silver, milky coffee or black. The hair is curly and dense. The texture of the poodle’s coat is unique and lends itself to various grooming.

Ensuring that the poodle has a beautiful and healthy aesthetic  requires a lot of attention and in this sense the care of the coat is essential. Most owners visit a professional dog hairdresser once or twice a month. However, if you want to save money, you can learn … it certainly takes time and sacrifice.

Many poodle dogs have watery eyes that stain the fur around them.  To reduce these spots, it is recommended to clean the dog’s face daily. You can use alcohol-free wipes or a cloth soaked in warm water.

A loyal breed

Intelligent, affectionate, loyal and mischievous  are just a few adjectives that define the character of this dog. Love being with people. He is an easily trained dog and a wonderful protector of the house. It adapts to various types of spaces, houses or apartments, even if it prefers to live indoors, with the family, especially the toy poodle or the dwarf dog.

The poodle dog is the perfect companion for the little ones of the house. However, be careful because if children are not used to handling a dog, they could accidentally injure the toy poodle or the miniature dog.
