4. Provide adequate nutrition

Another tip for having a turtle as a pet is related to its diet. You will need to consult your vet – preferably one who specializes in these types of animals – to find out what is best for you.

Land turtles are herbivores, so they eat leaves, lettuce, grass, cabbage, and even fruits and vegetables like tomatoes, apples, pears, or strawberries.

Those of water are usually carnivorous : they eat earthworms, crickets, lobsters, snails and even raw meat.

Turtles that eat

Either way, keep in mind that turtles don’t eat every day like a dog or cat. They may not eat for three days in a row. If after two days they still haven’t eaten, remove the food and put it back again. Do the same thing with the drinking water.

5. Maintain hygiene and cleanliness

It is very important to clean your pet’s house. In the case of turtles, their urine has a very strong and unpleasant smell.

The feces can be removed with a small shovel, such as the one used for the cat litter box. Thoroughly clean all areas of the kennel, even those that have become soiled with food.

6. Spend time with your turtle

After the first month, your turtle will have gotten used to its new home. You must know that they are shy and fearful animals! Over time they will trust you and recognize you as the one who feeds them.

If he bites you, maybe it is because he feels in danger. If so, let her get used to it for another week and avoid the approach unless you have to feed her. Don’t forget to disinfect the wound caused by the bite well.

Finally, when you have a turtle as a pet, try to make it happy: offer it a large house and quality food, find a place for it exposed to sunlight and avoid other pets disturbing it.
