Should you take out insurance for your dog?

Since there are some dog breeds that are considered potentially dangerous, there are a number of reasons why it may be worthwhile to take out insurance for your dog.

Surely you have heard of dog insurance, but you may think that it is only necessary in the case of potentially dangerous breeds. This does not mean that it is not useful for other animals as well. If you are wondering whether or not to take insurance for your dog , read on.

Insurance for your dog, why?

The law says that we are responsible for our animals and that, therefore, we must “pay” in one way or another for the damage they cause to property, people, objects, etc. Since you know your dog, you may think you are in no danger.

This may be true, but not always. There is a saying that states: “even a wise man acts like a fool under pressure”. Your dog may find himself in a desperate situation that leads him to bite a person, a child or another animal.

Annual pet insurance is not expensive and can save you a lot of trouble. It is something to consider taking into account other factors as well.

For example, the obligation for a dog to have insurance or not is covered by a municipal regulation. That is, if a municipality requires that certain or all races be insured, no other law exempts you from this.

On the other hand, even if a dog is not one of the potentially dangerous breeds, but weighs more than 20 kg, you have the obligation to insure it.

You also need to know if this rule fits what the law of the municipality in which you reside stipulates. Insurance is an added requirement to responsible pet ownership.

Compare prices

The average price of pet insurance fluctuates between 70 and 80 euros per year,  although insurance companies struggle to win customers: you could get discounts.

If you already have home insurance, you might ask if it covers your furry friend and what kind of protection does it offer. In this way there would be no extra expenses.

Another aspect to take into account is the value of the dog. Many breeds are very expensive, and this type of insurance covers all their economic value  in the event that the animal is lost, stolen or in an accident, including veterinary expenses and stays in animal pensions.

In the case of potentially dangerous breeds, insurance is mandatory. The owner must have the following requirements:

  • Being of age.
  • Have no criminal record.
  • The physical and psychic abilities to take care of a dog with these characteristics.
  • You will have to take out insurance for damages against third parties with a minimum value of 120,000 euros.

Having a pet comes with a number of responsibilities and the owners are responsible for the dog’s actions. With insurance you can prevent rather than cure, don’t you think?
