Let's get to know short-haired cat breeds together

If you are looking for a pet to adopt and don’t want one that needs a lot of care or attention, no doubt  short-haired cats are an excellent choice. Thanks to their independence, felines are ideal for people who don’t spend a lot of time indoors. And if you add to that the fact that some breeds don’t require a lot of effort, they turn into the perfect animals. Let’s get to know them in the following article.

What are short-haired cat breeds?

There are approximately 25 short-haired cat breeds, and now we are going to introduce you to some of them:

1. Russian blue

Of medium size and short hair (with a double coat) in silver color, it  is a cat that differs from the others due to its intelligence and its affectionate being. He loves being in contact with people. It has long ears, prominent whiskers and does not form hairballs. Born in the north of Russia, it is one of the oldest breeds.

2. Bengal

This hybrid feline was created by crossing a domestic cat and a leopard cat in the United States. It is like having a wild feline at home, but small in size, due to its brindle coat. It is a muscular and robust animal, with a thick tail, small ears and a short, dense and soft coat. He is a great swimmer, an unusual quality for a cat. He can be hyperactive and playful.

3. Devon Rex

It is another of the short-haired cat breeds, but in this case it has fluffy curls. Born in Devon, an English town, he has large ears, oval eyes and a small head. It is an affectionate animal that emits sweet meows. He is always alert and attentive. The coat is usually yellow in color.

4. Isle of Man cat

One of the characteristics of this breed is that it does not have a tail (it has only a small part of it) due to a natural mutation. This cat originally from the Isle of Man (Great Britain) was very popular 300 years ago. It can be white with black, gray or brown spots.

He prefers quiet environments, is not shy at all, loves the attentions of his owners and adapts without problems to any family group. If he has access to an external environment, he will show his hunting instincts.

5. Ocicat

Its name derives from “Ocelot” and “Cat”, as it has a short coat with polka dots like this wild feline. This breed originated in the United States from the cross between a Siamese and an Abyssinian Siamese. It is not very popular in Europe  and is a strong, wild looking animal. It has a prominent nose, large ears, muscular legs and a long, thin tail.

The Ocicat is playful, curious, active and dominant  with other cats. It is very easy to take care of his coat as he can be brushed regularly.

6. Carthusian

The original name is Chartreux, and it is a cat native to France, although its ancestors are from Turkey and Iran. He has copper or orange eyes and gray hair with blue reflections. The Chartreux is a fairly popular cat in French territory and looks a lot like the Russian Blue. It is a calm, silent, reserved animal, devoted to its owners, playful and very curious. His favorite pastime is sleeping.

7. Japanese Bobtail

Another of the short-haired cat breeds that draws attention for its small, rabbit-like tail. Iconic in Japanese folklore, it is quite popular throughout Southeast Asia. It has a soft, smooth, silky and slightly wavy hair at the tips. This feline is quite active, outgoing, curious and loves to go out and about at night. He does not like loneliness.

8. Cornish Rex

A native of Cornwall (south east of England)  this cat is elegant and slender,  although quite muscular. It has a wavy and soft coat. It is medium in size, has large, round ears, clear eyes, a thin tail and the hair can be of any color.

Other short-haired cats are the Abyssinian, British Shorthair, European Burmese, Burmilla, German Rex, Korat, Egyptian Mau, Sokoke and Singapura.
