Adopting an abandoned pet

Adopting a pet involves a deep commitment on your part. Do not forget that the animal you want to adopt has already been abandoned once and it is not good for them to go through the same traumatic experience again. For this reason, before taking this step, think carefully and seriously consider everything that involves adoption.

First of all, it is necessary to clarify that dogs, cats and, in general, all pets, are not toys. These are living beings and not disposable objects, which you can easily get rid of if, for example:

  • They bore you
  • They no longer have fun as they used to when they were adorable puppies
  • They get sick or get old
  • They bark or meow too much
  • They break objects or go to their business everywhere
  • They reach too large a size when they grow up
  • They get pregnant

Remember that the causes of abandonment that we have just listed are not the fault of the animals but rather of the previous owners, who have not been able or wanted to take care of them in a responsible way.

Adopting an abandoned pet is undoubtedly the best choice you can make. However, giving these animals the opportunity for a new life involves a great responsibility and commitment on your part.

The responsibilities involved in adopting an abandoned animal

So, before making a commitment, which, if serious, is forever, you must keep in mind that with it you will also have to take on the following responsibilities, depending on the cases and needs:

  • Provide him with proper nutrition, adequate for each stage of his life and suitable for his weight and size
  • Take him to the vet to do periodic check-ups, to vaccinate him and to deparasitize him.
  • Take him for a walk and play with him every day
  • Offer him a comfortable and comfortable space to rest
  • Get him to socialize and educate him
  • Have it sterilized (if the center where you adopted it has not already taken care of it)
  • Take care of the grooming
  • Have a trusted person to take care of him when you go on vacation or, alternatively, take him with you.

You will also need to take into consideration the following:

    • Extra expenses for dealing with certain veterinary emergency situations
    • If you have enough space in your home for the pet, you and your family can live comfortably
    • The size of the future animal and the size it can reach in adulthood
    • If you can count on the favor and support of the whole family, they will have to make themselves responsible together with you for the new member of the family
    • If the presence of an animal could generate problems with the neighbors

    A new opportunity

Giving an abandoned animal a second chance and offering it a new life is a truly worthwhile action. And rest assured that he will always know how to show his gratitude to you.

Never forget that the affection an animal is capable of giving you far outweighs the inconvenience it can occasionally cause you.

If, therefore, you are sure that you are ready to take on the responsibilities that the adoption of an animal entails, do not waste any more time and go to visit a kennel, in search of your future friend.

There you can ask for advice from those in charge, so that they can help you find the animal that is right for you and your possibilities.

What if you find an animal on the street?

It may happen that you find a dog or a cat on the street and decide to take it home with you. In this case, the first thing to do will be to find out if he is lost and if you can bring him back to his master.

If you discover that the animal has been abandoned and you really decide you want to keep it with you, then take it to the vet to check its health, deparasitize it and establish the schedule of the necessary vaccinations.

If, on the other hand, you have acted on impulse but, in reality, you cannot take care of him properly, do not abandon him again in the middle of a road: do not make him suffer again.

Try to find him a good accommodation by asking relatives, friends and acquaintances. Or contact a kennel or animal shelter, where they will be able to take care of him and will do everything possible to find him a new family.
