Papillon, The Intelligent And Energetic Toy Dog

The papillon, or continental dwarf spaniel with straight ears, is a small dog of Franco-Belgian origin, ideal for living in a home. In this article we will talk about the  characteristics and curiosities of this beautiful pet. A nice, intelligent and sociable toy dog .

Origin of the Papillon breed

Although there are no specific details on the history of this dog breed, experts conclude that it is a fairly old type of animal, dating back to around 300 years ago. In fact, in French paintings of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these little dogs can be appreciated in many representations and works of art.

Despite its long history, the breed standard is relatively recent. The FCI ( International Cynological Federation ) recognized it only in 1937, including it in group 9.

Physical appearance of the Papillon dog

We are faced with a toy dog with a harmonious structure, with the body slightly longer than the height. Its head is in proportion to the rest of the body, with a moderately long muzzle, although shorter than the skull. The spot that separates the two nasal-frontal areas is clearly visible, especially in the smaller specimens.

The ears are the most important feature and also serve to determine the type of bow tie in front of you. In fact, within the continental dwarf spaniel breed, there are two varieties: the Papillon and the Phalène. When the ear has a tall structure, with the cartilage open and oriented to one side, we speak of ours.

In the context of competitions, two categories are distinguished (based on size):

  • Weight less than 2.5 kg in males and females.
  • 2.5 to 4.5 kg in males and 2.5 to 5 kg in females.

As for the coat, the Papillon has an abundant, bright and wavy single coat. The appearance of the hair resembles that of the English spaniel, but clearly differs from its cousin spaniel Pekingese. It is rarely possible to glimpse any resemblance to the Pomeranian. All colors are allowed, as long as they are on a white background, which is the main color on the body and on the legs.

Papillon character

The bow tie, like most small dogs, belonging to group 9 of the FCI, is playful, affectionate and lively. It fits very well in small apartments. A quality that makes this pet perfect for city life.

It is true that he can be a little jealous and possessive, so his socialization and upbringing must start at a very early age. Gets along well with children and adapts to family life.

Papillon dog health and care

Its fur is delicate and requires some care. It is advisable to take him for grooming at least twice a year. This will serve to maintain the official cut of the hair, foreseen by the breed. Likewise, weekly brushing is recommended, so that it doesn’t shed too much hair.

Despite its delicate appearance, the papillon is a hardy breed for which no special incidence of disease has been reported. However, to ensure that your pet is healthy, you will obviously need to take him to the vet frequently, carry out periodic checks and make sure that his diet is always complete and sufficiently balanced.
