Tips For Breeding Canaries

There are several things to take into consideration for the correct execution of this activity, such as providing the specimen chosen for mating with a specific cage. At the beginning, in fact, the couple must remain separate, so it is important to duplicate the elements necessary for survival – a feeder and a drinking trough – and to acquire the material for building the nest.
Tips for breeding canaries

Canaries are birds that have always been part of our lives. This singing bird has been kept indoors as a pet for years. Today many continue to choose it as a pet and some even dedicate themselves to breeding them for pleasure or for professional purposes.

Canary breeding at home: how to do it?

To start our home canary breeding, you need to follow a few simple steps. Here they are:

The cage

Even if you already have a bird, the cage you keep it in will not be suitable for canary breeding. In fact, there are specific cages for this purpose.

They are made up of various compartments divided by a barrier placed in the middle that allows the birds to be separated and not to see each other, but to hear each other.

The barrier is of two types: one opaque and another net. Both play an important role in the reproduction and breeding of canaries, which we will explain later.

Choose the specimens

Once you have the appropriate compartments, you have to choose the canaries you want to mate. Think about their physical characteristics that will affect those of the little ones. So, depending on the color, elegance or shape you want them to have, you will have to choose one type of canary rather than another.

You will certainly know that within the canary family there are several specimens with different shapes and colors, so you must always be very clear what you are looking for for the little ones, whether they are for you or you want to sell them.

Keep everything you need close at hand

Don’t wait until you join canaries to  have everything you need to nest. Also, remember that you now need to have two troughs, two feeders, and any other essential items that each bird may need.

Don’t forget to get some calcium for the female, who will lay the eggs, and food for the young. If you are cautious and equipped with everything you need before joining the canaries, your breeding will find no obstacles.

Help them go into heat

The first thing to do will be to put the canaries in each side of the cage with the separators, the opaque one and the mesh one, or if you prefer only with the opaque one. You have to leave them like this for about 10 or 15 days. In this way they will be able to hear each other but they will not be able to see each other and this will awaken in them the desire to be together.

After this stage, it is time to withdraw the opaque separator and leave the net alone; now they can see each other but not touch. They will have to stay like this for another 10 or 15 days. During this period it is advisable to provide the mother with a pre-hatching food so that she gets used to eating it.

The time has come

Once this month has passed, it is time to remove the separator and let the canaries meet. They will have spent so much time feeding their desire that they will not be long in mating. This period, which goes from mating to spawning, lasts about two weeks.

Make sure they have the necessary materials so that during this time they will be able to build their own nest where the mother will lay eggs. As you can see breeding canaries at home is anything but difficult and, by following these simple steps, you will have little canaries sooner than you imagine.
