What To Do If Your Dog Has A Hair Loss?

By nature,  some dogs shed every semester,  especially long-haired ones. However, when a dog sheds hair frequently, it is important to identify the causes.

The hair reflects the physical condition of the animal. When it is shiny and silky, it means that the dog is in excellent health, while when it is dull or dry, it could indicate a problem.

The coat of animals requires special care. This is the case with brushing and bathing, which are part of the daily routine. Even in these situations, irregularities can be noted during the moult.

Why does a dog frequently fall out of hair? 

Some breeds tend to shed a large amount of hair. It is very common in Golden Retrievers, but also in Siberian shepherds and Labradors. When hair loss occurs outside the moulting period, it is important to evaluate the possible causes:

• Natural causes. The first reason is a renewal of the mantle.

In spring and autumn, it  is common for dogs to shed their coat. They lose the old one to make room for the new one.

Regardless of the breed and the seasons, the moult can present itself with greater or lesser intensity. In some cases, huge amounts of fur may be found near the animal.

• Wrong power supply. The second reason is improper nutrition. This has nothing to do with the amount of food, but with the nutrient intake.

An animal that is low in protein will have a dry and brittle coat. However, a higher intake of fat helps to fortify the coat. Omega 3 coarse acids and vitamins A, C and B are essential for a healthy coat.

Even drinking too little water can cause hair loss. Dehydration causes dry skin and weakens the coat.

• Hormonal or emotional disturbances. As for disease, anemia can be the cause of hair loss.  Anemia is a hormonal disorder that is due to a poor diet, but  also to situations of stress or anxiety.

Generally, dogs undergoing radical changes in their routines can shed their hair. If it is an emotional problem, the condition improves when normal returns.

Skin disorders and parasites

• Skin diseases.  Another cause is skin diseases. The most common is mange, which occurs through localized hair loss. In addition, the skin looks red from irritation. In these cases, we recommend that you visit a veterinarian.

• Parasites. Parasites, both internal and external, can also contribute to shedding hair. Dogs that are sensitive to flea bites can scratch excessively,  which explains the lack of hair in the area.

What to do to avoid hair loss?

• Regular cleaning. Bathing your dog regularly using a specific shampoo helps control hair loss. However, baths should not be too frequent, as they could dry out the skin.

Some prefer to use hair loss products. Before using them, ask for advice from a specialist.

• Brush the coat constantly. This process not only establishes an emotional bond with the animal, but also helps it during the moulting period.

By brushing, a large amount of dead hair can be removed. It is important to use a brush suitable for the dog’s coat type. One with thick, close bristles is ideal for short-haired dogs, while a comb with wide, separate bristles prevents knots from forming in long-haired dogs.

• Balanced nutrition. A balanced diet is essential for dogs that shed their coat.
• Visit to the vet. A specialist can discover irregularities in due course.
